Playing responsibly
Sage Draws exists because picking numbers is fun. It stops being fun at a fairly predictable point, and it is much easier to notice that point if you have thought about it in advance.
Free, confidential help in California
The California Problem Gambling Helpline runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is free, confidential, and available in multiple languages. You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need to have decided anything.

If you would rather talk to someone outside California, the National Problem Gambling Helpline is also on 1-800-GAMBLER, and Gamblers Anonymous runs free meetings across the state.
Four rules worth setting before you play
Decide the amount first, and make it small
Pick a figure you would not mind setting fire to, because in expectation that is roughly what happens. Every state lottery pays out less than it takes in — that gap is how it funds public programmes. There is no version of this where the maths favours you.
Never chase a loss
Buying more tickets after a losing draw does not improve your position. It is the single most reliable way that a harmless habit turns into a damaging one, and it feels completely rational while you are doing it.
Treat it as entertainment, never as a plan
A lottery ticket is not a retirement strategy, a way out of debt, or an investment. If you find yourself counting on a win, that is the signal to stop, not the signal to buy more.
Keep the odds in view
The Powerball jackpot is about a 1 in 292 million shot per line. Buying ten lines makes it 1 in 29 million, which is ten times better and still indistinguishable from zero. Nothing on this site, or any site, changes those numbers.
Signs it has stopped being fun
Any one of these is worth paying attention to. Several together is worth a phone call.
- Spending more than you decided to, or more than you can comfortably lose.
- Buying more tickets after a loss to try to get back to even.
- Playing with money meant for rent, food, bills or debt.
- Hiding how much you play, or how much you have spent, from people close to you.
- Borrowing money, selling things, or using credit to keep playing.
- Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you cannot play.
- Thinking about the next draw when you should be thinking about something else.
- Believing you are due a win, or that a system will turn things around.
If you want to stop
California runs a voluntary self-exclusion programme for casino gambling, and the helpline above can walk you through the options for lottery play, including practical steps like removing payment methods and asking a trusted person to hold the reins for a while. Recovery support is free and you can use it before things get bad.
A note on this site specifically
Sage Draws shows frequency statistics, and statistics about random events are very easy to over-read. We have tried hard to label the folklore as folklore and to put the honest caveat above the charts rather than in small print. But if you notice yourself building a theory out of the hot-number list, please treat that as a signal. There is no theory. It is a shuffling machine with no memory.
You must be 18 or older to buy a California Lottery ticket. If you are under 18, none of this is for you yet.
